Flying Club KILG

Posted by Lonzo Mc Laughlin on Sep 4, 2017 8:42 am

Good morning,

I have been a member of a flying club based out of KILG for about 10'years.  It's a stable club with a well equipped 172/180hp.  We are expanding to add a 182R plane to the club the I purchased and will lease it to the club.  We are currently accepting new members.  We don't do primary training, but do training after private.

I personally fly up and down the East coast to visit family and vacation.  I recently became a CFI and look to help others enjoy flight!

Hi Lonzo,

Your club sounds like it is healthy and thriving. Very happy to hear that. Looks like KILG is a pretty busy airport - and what a great central location for your ventures up and down the east coast! Is there by chance a restaurant on the field? I fly for food (Saturday morning flyouts) and am always on the lookout for new destinations?

Be well,
Les

Les,

there re are none on the field, but both FlyAdvanced and Atlantic typically have crew cars that you could borrow and hit some restaurants or shopping in the area.  Christiana Mall is close and has lots of good options.

This is sub shop is hidden but is a real jem.

KMIV, KMQS, LNS, and 26N all have restaurants on the field. S37 has one thats a very short walk.  CBE is a bit further South, but has food on the field.

Thanks for the list, Lonzo. Coincidentally, I had breakfast with a friend in his new (to him) Skyhawk at KCBE just this Saturday. They had a gymkhana underway so part of the taxiway was coned off, but it all worked fine. I knew of most of the places you mentioned, but not Millville or S37. We'll have to check those out.

Thanks!
Les

Lonzo,

You are bringing back the memories. I took all of my primary flight training at ILG, starting from a trailer/office owned by Dawn Aero. I bought a 182 in '89 and flew to west central Florida, the Keys and Bahamas regularly for 8 years. There used to be a 95th Aero Squadron next to the Motel T hangers. I understand it is closed now. Kind of a shame, because they had a small seating area where you could linger and watch the arrivals and departures. Several of us,who met in primary training were the unofficial score keepers for landings on 1 and 14.

Cool.  I may be looking for a Flying Club.  I'm a Rusty Pilot waiting to hear back from the FAA on my medical.  I work in Newark, DE and live in Chadds Ford, PA so ILG is right along my daily commute, plus ILG is where I took my private pilot training in the 90's.  BTW: Does the club have access to a CFII in case I want to take my instrument rating?

Robert,  yes we have a couple of CFIIs in the club.  From a CFI/CFII perspective the club is actually CFI heavy.  We have several professional pilots in the club that are glad to instruct on the side.  I personally got my CFI this past year and plan to work on my CFII  come late winter to complete that add on.   In a perfect world I could be working with an actual student while doing so (I'm receiving instruction from a CFII while 'teaching' a club student.  Another club member is working on their Instrument rating currently and a second wants to start this winter I believe.  It would be good for a couple of members to work together to share learnings and challenges.  I think you have already reached out to our President for initial inquiry.  If I can help in any way, let me know.
