Should I continue training or wait

Posted by Todd Le Clair on Jul 17, 2017 2:37 pm

I am pusuing my private pilot certificate and am real close to being soloed.
There is going to be a minimum of a 4 week delay for my medical.
My question is should I continue to take lessons, or wait until I have my medical and can be soloed?
I dont' want to spend time and money if it won't allow me to advance.
Thanks for any and all input.

I would definitely keep going. Make sure your instructor is aware of the delay, but there are a lot of things that you can work on without soloing. The last thing that you want right now is a little rust, and it comes fast!

Hi Todd,

I agree - keep going if you can afford to. If you need to save a little bit of money, drop your frequency a bit but keep up on your emergency procedures, checklists and try "chair flying" to stay proficient while you wait for your medical. (I'm a student as well and this is all advice my instructor gave me). Check out the information under "Can't Seem to Find Enough Time to Get Current" from AOPA's Rusty Pilots Resource page. https://aopa.org/training-and-safety/lapsed-pilots/rusty-pilots/resources-for-rusty-pilots

Speaking as an instructor, I'm with Christopher -- press on with additional training.  There's no reason you can't work on other required areas like cross-country navigation, night flying, or instrument flying (which all must be done with your instructor anyway) while waiting for the medical situation to spin itself out.  Stopping for four weeks will just allow the basic flying skills you've developed to fade so you have to go back and redevelop them before soloing.

Do you have any doubts about passing your medical? If so, I would hold off on flying if cash is a concern. Otherwise, keep going! My only other concern is why is there a delay? If it's because your school didn't have you apply for it on day one, I would question their professionalism and preparedness.

Have fun!
