Class 3 or basicmed

Posted by Christopher Bowman on Jul 17, 2017 8:33 pm

I believe that I am eligible for basicmed, but I am thinking that I would rather just do class 3 because I understand that it is valid for longer. Is that correct? Also, what is the best way to find a doctor for class 3 medical? I thought AOPA had a list, but I have not been able to find it.

[Ron] More or less so, depending on your age.  For us over-40 types, the Third Class is only valid for two years while under BasicMed you don't have to back to the physician for four years.  However, for the under-40's, the Third Class is normally valid for five years (assuming no Special Issuance requirements), and there's no age-based difference in the interval for BasicMed physical exams.  Just remember that regardless of your age, you have to reaccomplish the on-line Basic Medical Education course every two years at the halfway point between physical exams.  In addition, discuss this with your aviation insurer, since a few pilots have told me their insurer declined to accept BasicMed, especially for older pilots (like 65-70 and up) where they wanted an annual Third Class exam.

[Ron] Unfortunately, AOPA has not yet put anything like that together.  It's pretty much a matter of asking around, among both physicians and local pilots, to see which physicians will do it.  If you find one who does, you might see if they're willing to have their name/contact information posted at the local airport.

The FAA's website has an AME search capability: https://designee.faa.gov/SelectTypeOfSearch/SelectTypeOfSearch

Any AME will do the class 3 exam. Try searching the net for an AME in your area.

Any AME can do the Third Class, but whether s/he is willing to do BasicMed is another story.  Some have said "yes", some have said "no".
